The waiters, the tasks and the original finding

The origin story usually told is that Zeigarnik's supervisor, Kurt Lewin, noticed that waiters could recall unpaid orders in detail but forgot them once the bill was settled. Whether or not that observation happened exactly as retold, it framed the question Zeigarnik took into the laboratory in the 1920s: does an unfinished task occupy memory differently from a finished one?

Her experimental design was unglamorous and effective. Participants worked through a series of small tasks such as puzzles and manual jobs. Some they were allowed to complete. Others were interrupted before completion, often on a pretext. Afterwards, they were asked to list the tasks they remembered. The interrupted ones came back more readily than the finished ones, by a margin large enough to be interesting.

Lewin's explanation, which Zeigarnik worked within, was tension-based. Starting a goal-directed task creates a psychological tension that persists until the goal is reached. Completion discharges it. Interruption leaves it running, and running tension keeps the task accessible.

What later work confirmed, and what it did not

This is where the popular version goes wrong. The Zeigarnik effect is often quoted as an iron law, and it is not. Attempts to replicate it across the following decades produced an inconsistent picture, with the effect appearing robustly in some designs and vanishing in others. What emerged from that mess is more useful than the original claim, because it tells you the conditions.

  • Motivation matters. If a participant does not care whether the task is finished, interrupting it does not create tension worth remembering.
  • Proximity to completion matters. Being stopped just before the end tends to bite harder than being stopped at the start.
  • Interpretation matters. An interruption read as failure can produce avoidance rather than rehearsal, which suppresses recall instead of boosting it.
  • Closure substitutes work. Later research on goal pursuit suggests that making a concrete plan for when and how you will finish can release much of the tension without actually finishing.

That last point is the most practically important and the least known. An open loop with a scheduled closing time behaves very differently from an open loop with no plan attached. One is a bookmark. The other is a low hum of unfinished business, and the difference between them is roughly the difference between anticipation and anxiety.

Why open loops occupy working memory

Working memory is small and expensive. An unresolved goal appears to keep a pointer active in it, which is why the unfinished item keeps surfacing while you brush your teeth. That is not a malfunction. A brain that dropped every unfinished intention the moment attention moved elsewhere would be catastrophically bad at anything requiring more than one sitting.

The cost is that pointers compete. Ten open loops do not produce ten times the retention, they produce a crowded, distracted state where none of them get proper rehearsal.
