It is how memory is built.
Narrative transportation: why a good story switches off your scepticism
Psychologists call the experience of being absorbed in a story narrative transportation. When you are transported, you stop evaluating claims sentence by sentence and start following the current of events instead. Attention narrows onto the story world, and the usual critical checkpoints, the ones that would normally ask 'is this true, is this relevant, is this well supported', quieten down.
That is exactly why transportation is such an effective learning tool and exactly why it needs a caveat, which we will get to. For now, the useful part: a transported reader or listener processes information more deeply, holds it longer, and connects it to more existing knowledge than someone skimming a list, because the story is doing organisational work the list leaves to you.
Causal structure is scaffolding you get for free
A bullet list gives you items. A story gives you items plus the relationships between them: this happened, which caused that, which forced this decision, which led to this outcome. Cognitive scientists sometimes describe this as a causal chain, and chains are far easier to hold in memory than unconnected items, because remembering one link helps you reconstruct the next.
This is the same principle behind spaced repetition and cognitive load research: memory favours material that arrives already structured, because structuring information yourself, on the fly, consumes working memory that could otherwise be spent encoding it. A well-built story does the structuring for you, which is a large part of why cognitive load drops when facts are delivered as narrative rather than as a reference table.

Humans are extremely good at remembering other people: their names, motives, relationships, and the things that went wrong for them. This is plausibly a very old capacity, older than literacy, and stories exploit it directly by attaching abstract information to a person. 'Interest rates rose sharply in 1979' is abstract. 'Paul Volcker decided that inflation mattered more than his own popularity, and raised rates until it hurt' is a decision made by someone, with a motive and a cost, and it is far easier to hold onto.

The oldest formal memory technique on record, often attributed to the poet Simonides of Ceos in an account that is more legend than documented fact, is the method of loci, or memory palace: you imagine a familiar space and place items to be remembered along a route through it, then recall them by walking the route mentally.
The method of loci is really a story technique wearing different clothes. It works by giving unconnected items a sequence and a set of locations, which is another way of saying it gives them structure and characters, in this case rooms standing in for characters. Competitive memory athletes still use it today, and the general lesson generalises: sequence beats list, because sequence tells your memory where to look next.
Why sequence beats lists for recall
A list asks you to remember five independent facts. A sequence asks you to remember one route with five stops, and each stop cues the next. This is the practical reason ordered material about history, science or ideas tends to outperform an equivalent set of standalone facts in later recall: the order itself is a retrieval aid, not just a presentation choice.
- Sequence gives you a starting point when memory stalls, since you can return to the beginning and walk forward.
- Cause and effect give you a reason each fact exists, rather than an arbitrary position in a list.

Turning a list into a story: a practical method
You do not need to be a novelist to do this. Four moves cover most cases.
- 1Find or invent a decision point. Almost any list of facts has a moment where someone chose one option over another. Put that decision at the centre.
- 2Attach each fact to a consequence. Instead of 'the harbour chain was 750 metres long', say 'the chain was long enough that the defenders believed no ship could cross it, which is exactly why the attackers went around it by land instead'.
- 3Order by time or by cause, not by importance. Importance-ordered lists read like rankings; time-ordered material reads like an unfolding event, and unfolding events are what memory is built to hold.
- 4Keep the tables. Anything that is genuinely reference material, a date, a formula, a name spelling, should stay in a plain list next to the story, not buried inside it.
You can test this on your own notes. Take five facts you are trying to remember for a talk or an exam, ask who wanted what and what stood in their way, and rewrite the five facts as a short account of that conflict. Most people find recall noticeably better within a day, though this is a personal-observation-scale effect rather than a controlled result, and it will not replace revision for material that genuinely requires precision.
