Spaced Repetition, Explained Like a Museum Tour

Imagine two ways to visit a museum. In the first, you stand in front of one painting for three hours. In the second, you walk the whole floor, leave, and come back on four separate afternoons, each time noticing what you had forgotten and looking harder at it.
The first visitor spends longer looking. The second remembers the collection. That is spaced repetition, and the rest of this article is the mechanism behind why the second tour wins.
What spaced repetition actually is
Spaced repetition is the practice of reviewing material at increasing intervals rather than in one block. You meet a fact today, again tomorrow, again in four days, again in ten, again in a month. Each successful recall after a gap pushes the next review further out. Each failure pulls it closer.
Two separate findings make it work. The spacing effect: distributed practice produces better long-term retention than the same total time massed together. The testing effect: retrieving information strengthens memory more than re-reading it. Spaced repetition is simply the two combined into a schedule.
Why the gap is the active ingredient
When you review something immediately, the answer is still sitting in working memory. You recognise it, feel fluent, and learn very little. When you review after a delay long enough that recall requires effort, your brain has to rebuild the route to that memory, and the act of rebuilding is what makes the route more durable.
That is why a slightly uncomfortable review is better than a comfortable one. The desirable difficulty is not a personality test, it is the work that produces the result. Study sessions that feel smooth are usually the ones that leave nothing behind, which is the same reason the forgetting curve punishes single-pass reading so heavily.
Why cramming fails, precisely
Cramming is not useless: it reliably produces a short-term spike, which is why it survives as a strategy. Students pass Friday's test. The problem is the shape after Friday.
- No gaps means no effortful retrieval, so almost all of the session is recognition rather than recall.
- Fluency during the session is mistaken for durability, so you stop before the material is secure.
- The whole block is encoded in one context, one room, one mood, one time of day, which gives you fewer retrieval cues later.
- Sleep, which does much of the consolidation work, gets compressed by exactly the schedule that made cramming necessary.
- The decay curve after a crammed session is unusually steep, so a month later there is often less left than after a fraction of the time spread out.
How apps implement the schedule
Most implementations descend from the same family of algorithms, and the differences matter less than whether the app does any of it at all.
- 1Fixed-interval systems, the Leitner box model, move a card to a longer-interval stack when you get it right and back to the first stack when you get it wrong. Simple, transparent, surprisingly effective.
- 2SM-2 and its successors, used in Anki and many flashcard apps, calculate the next interval from your self-rated difficulty and the card's history. Newer schedulers such as FSRS fit the interval to your own forgetting rate.
- 3Implicit spacing, used by many daily learning apps, does not schedule individual cards but reintroduces earlier material inside later lessons, so the second encounter arrives as part of the story instead of a quiz.
- 4Streak-and-feed systems, which are not spaced repetition at all. Daily presence is not the same as scheduled return to specific material, and it is worth knowing which one you have bought.

It is a retention tool, not a comprehension tool. Scheduling a fact you never understood simply means meeting your confusion at longer intervals. Understand first, then space. It also does not create motivation: a queue of two hundred overdue cards is the most common reason people abandon the method, so start small enough that the daily queue stays boring.
The visitor who leaves the room and comes back is the one who remembers the collection.
